Florida Vehicle Registration: What New Residents Must Know

Florida law requires vehicle registration within 10 days of establishing residency. Documents, fees, and timing.

Florida law requires you to register your vehicle within 10 days of starting a job, enrolling kids in school, or filing for homestead exemption. The clock starts the moment one of those events occurs — not when you cross the state line.

Costs vary by county but total roughly $225 in initial title and registration fees. Subsequent annual renewal is closer to $50 – $75 depending on vehicle weight class.

Bring proof of ownership (title or current state registration), proof of FL insurance with the FL minimums ($10K PIP and $10K PDL), and proof of identity. You'll need to surrender your out-of-state plates at most tax collector offices.

If you finance the vehicle, your lender holds the title. You can request the title release in writing, or use FL's electronic title transfer process — your county tax collector can walk you through it.

You also have 30 days from residency establishment to convert your out-of-state driver's license to a Florida license. Bring two proofs of FL address, Social Security card, and birth certificate or passport.
