Florida Hurricane Insurance: What Movers Need to Know
Windstorm and flood coverage aren't included in most standard policies. How to think about Florida home insurance.
Florida homeowner and renter insurance is its own line of business. Standard policies in most states cover wind damage as part of the package; in Florida, windstorm is typically excluded or requires a separate rider.
Three coverages to assemble before move-in: standard homeowner/renter (fire, theft, liability), windstorm/hurricane (separate policy or rider), and flood insurance through NFIP (federal) or a private market alternative.
Premiums vary dramatically by county and ZIP. Coastal Miami-Dade, Broward, and Lee counties carry the highest rates. Inland Orange and Polk counties are meaningfully cheaper. Get 3 quotes before you sign a lease or close.
If your move date is during hurricane season (June 1 – November 30), your mover should provide documentation that crews are licensed to operate during named-storm events. Most reputable carriers will reschedule for free if a named storm enters the cone within 72 hours of pickup.
Document your inventory before pickup. Photograph high-value items and keep receipts. Mid-move damage from a storm is one of the most common Florida-specific claims.
